The star packed Baa Baaz team had their annual outing when they took part in the Whakatane Touch Association tournament on Saturday 11 January along with 70 other teams.
Tana Umaga, a long-term Baa Baaz member had the services of several high profile sports stars in his side which included Whakatane’s former league star Benji Marshall, All Black and Investec Super Rugby champion Chiefs captain Liam Messam who played for the Baa Baaz for the first time.
The side which has been running for 26 years also featured Former Warriors and Kiwis player Logan Swann and former All Black Ofisa Tonu’u. Fellow All Black Piri Weepu, also came along to support his team but injury forced him on the sidelines.
The Popular team, who came third in the men’s restricted grade, always attract plenty of attention and this year the spectators were given an extra bit of excitement with Tana Umaga bringing the Ranfurly Shield that his Counties Manukau Steelers side won for the locals to enjoy and get photos with.
